Island Peak Climbing with Everest Base Camp Trek

Imja Tse also popularly known as Island Peak situated in Khumbu region with modest height of 6189m. It is one of the most ascent mountain peak and highly permitted peak of the Himalaya. An English mountaineer Eric Shipton named it as an Island peak in 1953. However it’s local name is Imja Tse. Before going for the Everest Expedition, the ligendery mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenjing Norgay also attempted to climb this peak as a training expedition. So, the mountaineers who are aiming to climb Everest can choose Island peak as a training expedition. Island Peak climbing is done along with the Everest Base Camp Trek as well.

The peak is standing with very little technical aspects; it offers itself even to the beginner climber with competitive endurance. However it is highly beaten climbing peak of Khumbu, Everest region. It takes normally 16-18 days to complete Island peak climbing. It is also better to make this trip with the combine form of Everest Base Camp Trek.

How to get Island Peak

The trip begins from Lukla, which is gateway of Everest region. After 4-5 days continues trekking with sepdning 2 nights in Namche and Dingboche, you can reach to Chukung. Chukung is the nearest village from Island Peak. Also you can hire some climbing equipment and all necessaries stuffs from Chukung. The trekking period is good enough for the acclimatization. More acclimatization helps more confident and easy for climbing. Every climber should familiarize himself or herself with the climate before pushing to the summit. In some cases climbers can spend some couple of nights at Base Camp and Chukung for the best performance whiling climbing the Peak.

Technical part of Island peak climbing

The climbing to the top starts off with along a ridge where climbers use foot traction called crampons along with rope to elevate upwards. The way across the glacier is easy with occasional fractures in them. Depends in weather and snow condition, climbing to the Island peak can be little bit more technical. At least one professional climbing Sherpa guide must have in your climbing group. Without having support of Sherpa guide, it may hard to ascent Island Peak. This expedition would be best for those who are aiming to climb other highest peak of Himalayas.

What to expect in Island Peak climbing

After reaching to the top, magnificent view of Lhotse, Shar, Makalu, Baruntse and Amadablam is seen clearly. During the trekking period, you will explore some of the highest mountain peaks including Mount Everest, Cho Yue and Lhotse etc. The beautiful Sherpa culture and their traditions are always remarkable part of the trip. The whole Everest region is situated in Sagarmatha National Park, this is what makes you can explore the wild life, flora and fauna as well. Breathtaking river, glaciers, green forest which is home of many rare wildlife makes you happy. Especially Musk Deer, Himalayan Thar, Himalayan Moonal and Red Panda can be seen easily while trekking in this region.

Best Season for Island peak climbing and Everest Base Camp Trek

For the Everest Base Camp Trek and Island Peak climbing, spring and autumn are considered the best seasons. During the months of these two season, the whole Everest region is crowded with hundreds of thousands tourist from all over the world. As a trekkers or climbers you must have proper gears and clothing to make the trip much more successful and meaningful. Without having good enough clothes we can imagine to make the trip successful.
